STCW Certified Crew Training and Maritime Education in Bangladesh

In today’s dynamic maritime industry, the continuous training and education of seafarers are paramount to maintaining safe, efficient, and compliant vessel operations. As global fleet demands grow, it is essential that sailing staff are thoroughly equipped to meet and exceed the highest international standards of seamanship and engineering. By investing significant time and resources into continuous human capital development, we ensure that every mariner deployed is highly competent in their respective duties. This unwavering commitment to comprehensive training not only safeguards the operational integrity of our vessels but also guarantees our clients receive unparalleled service backed by a proficient, world-class workforce.

At the foundation of this educational strategy is the International Maritime Academy (IMA), a premier pre-sea training center dedicated to cultivating the next generation of maritime professionals. As an esteemed institution approved by the Department of Shipping, the IMA operates on a sprawling, purpose-built campus featuring state-of-the-art administrative facilities, firefighting apparatus, and hands-on mechanical workshops. Each year, the academy produces a distinguished cohort of elite nautical and engineering cadets who undergo an intensive three-year program, seamlessly combining rigorous academic coursework with vital at-sea experience. By absorbing these highly qualified junior officers directly into our managed fleet, we secure a sustainable, long-term pipeline of talent perfectly aligned with the future requirements of our global customers.  Visit www.internationalmaritimeacademy.org for more information

Why Matters

Why In-House Maritime Training Matters

At Haque & Sons Ltd., we believe that exceptional crew performance begins with exceptional training. Rather than relying on third-party providers, we have invested in our own maritime training institutions to ensure every seafarer is trained to the highest international standards.

By managing our own training programs, instructors, simulators, and facilities, we maintain complete control over the quality, consistency, and effectiveness of every course. This enables us to develop highly competent, confident, and safety-focused seafarers who are fully prepared to meet the demands of modern shipping and exceed the expectations of our international principals.

Our Two Maritime Training Institutions

Haque & Sons Ltd. operates two separate training institutions, each serving a distinct stage of a seafarer’s career.

International Maritime Academy

Bangladesh Maritime Training Institute

Complementing this foundational education is the Bangladesh Maritime Training Institute (BMTI), an advanced post-sea facility meticulously designed to continuously elevate the expertise of active seafarers. Recognized for its operational excellence with ISO quality management certification, BMTI delivers critical upgrading courses in full compliance with STCW, MLC, and stringent international regulations. The institute boasts an impressive array of cutting-edge technology—including 180-degree full-mission bridge, Engine room simulator, ME Engine Simulator, IGF Dual Fuel LNG and Methanol Simulator, liquid cargo simulator, GMDSS Simulator, ECDIS and JRC.  Guided by highly experienced Master Mariners and Chief Engineers, this immersive training environment empowers our crew with the practical experience and specialized knowledge necessary to drive efficiency and uphold exceptional performance standards on every voyage.  Visit www.bmti.org for more information

Our Training Philosophy

Our training policy at Haque & Sons Ltd. is built on one core principle. Every person we employ must be highly competent in the duties they are required to perform onboard.

We continuously invest in the competence of our sailing staff through regular training and upgrading programs. We do not treat training as a one-time certification exercise. We treat it as an ongoing responsibility that runs throughout a seafarer’s career.

Our instructors at both IMA and BMTI are all Master Mariners and Chief Engineers with long experience on the specific vessel types they teach. They bring real-world knowledge into the classroom and simulator, making the training relevant, practical, and immediately applicable onboard.

Courses Offered at BMTI

BMTI offers a wide range of courses covering all levels of maritime certification and specialisation.

STCW 2010 mandatory courses for all grades of Certificate of Competency MLC 2006 compliance training Basic safety training including firefighting, first aid, survival craft, and personal safety Advanced firefighting Medical first aid and medical care Ship security officer training Tanker familiarisation and advanced tanker training for oil, chemical, and gas tankers Bridge resource management and bridge team management Ship manoeuvring and handling Ship to ship lightering operations ECDIS type specific training GMDSS general operator certificate Radar observer and ARPA courses Engine room resource management Crowd management and crisis management for passenger vessels High voltage training Enclosed space entry and rescue

Cadet Development at International Maritime Academy

IMA is more than a training center. It is a full maritime campus dedicated to developing the next generation of Bangladeshi officers.

The campus covers seven acres and includes a seven-story administrative building with 110,000 square feet of space. Facilities include a fire house, a life boat, and a fully equipped practical workshop, giving cadets hands-on experience with the equipment they will use at sea.

The program runs for 36 months in total. The first two years are spent on campus covering nautical science, marine engineering, maritime law, navigation, seamanship, and practical workshops. The third year is spent at sea on a managed vessel, putting all classroom learning into real practice.

After certification, IMA graduates commit to a five-year contract with Haque & Sons Ltd., ensuring our principals benefit from well-trained, company-familiar officers who are already integrated into our management systems.

Training for Ratings

In 2013, Haque & Sons Ltd. established a dedicated maritime training center specifically for ratings. This ensures that our ratings receive the same level of structured, high-quality training as our officers, and that they meet all applicable STCW and international standards for their ranks and roles.

This investment in ratings training reflects our belief that every crew member on a vessel, regardless of rank, deserves proper preparation and ongoing development.

How Our Training Connects to Crew Management

Our training institutions do not operate in isolation. They are directly connected to our crew management operations.

Every cadet who graduates from IMA enters our managed fleet. Every seafarer who goes through BMTI upgrading is better prepared for their next contract. Every in-house course we run is designed around the specific requirements of our principals and the vessel types they operate.

This integration between training and deployment is one of the most important reasons why the quality of Haque & Sons crew consistently exceeds the expectations of our international clients.

Approved and Certified

Our training programs carry the approvals and certifications that matter most to international shipowners and flag state authorities.

Bangladesh Maritime Training Institute is approved by DG Shipping Bangladesh for STCW 2010 courses and holds ISO 9001 certification from DNV, the first maritime training institute in Bangladesh to receive this recognition.

International Maritime Academy is approved by the Department of Shipping Bangladesh as the first private maritime academy in the country.

Haque & Sons Ltd. itself holds ISO 9001:2015 certification from DNV and is MLC 2006 certified, the first shipping company in Bangladesh to achieve both.
